Notes from practice 24 July

Warmup by Rachel

Se del tuo
Inject energy, otherwise sounds like boring polyphony
Start firmly on the note, together, no sliding/drifting
Basses - pay attention to phrasing which softens the words, otherwise leaves us with a tendency to turn it into a march.
Tendency to slow down. Follow Derrick's direction.
Follow the accents.
Tenors - sing with your eyebrows.
Watch rhythm especially after long rests.
Don't  breathe just before last bar whatever you do (GL)!!

Envoi
Tenors late at the beginning. Follow conductor's pace
Basses bars 25 and following emphasise because this is the main theme
Baritones bar 31 stop rushing
In percussive bits emphasise the 'ff' in 'fly'
Last three bars examined breaking the chords down and reassembling

Peacock
Worked on at a slower pace. Needs lots of homework. No longer looking like an impossible task!
Tenors bar 14 note misprint 'I saw saw', delete first 'saw', carry the 'I' for 2 beats
Basses -bar 25 'ground' last 3.5 beats
             - bar 18  work on chromatic steps at home, emphasise each step, ie Cree-EE-ee-ee-ee
             - bar 14 take your C from the tenors' previous note bar 13
Make it as weird as possible - emphasise each note

Piranhas

Dreams

Pronounce world as one syllable, not were-ild

Im Wald
Emphasise vowels not consonants
Remember contrast from p-f-p

Rehearsal notes 17 JULY

REHEARSAL NOTES

ABENDFEIER
Bar 2 The “a” in “Maria” is on the 4th beat and not the THIRD.
Bar 8 “Allen” should be all ONE Word.
Bar 6 Altos watch their B Natural. Basses don’t come in late, and Tenors watch tuning,
BARS 4/5 Altos not too loud and Sopranos not too hesitant .
ALL should follow the dynamics of the SOPRANOS.
PAGE 1 The middle system is still PIANO.
Bar 15 SOPRANOS Be brave with the top E.
BAR 17 Basses no Vibrato please
ALL Don’t be afraid of the consonants and the start and end of words.
BARS 17-20 Sing quiet and regular to introduce the CRESCENDO.
BARS 28-30 BASSES look at their section in detail.
BARS 31/32 Tenors and Basses emphasise this CLASH
BARS 36 Basses avoid SLIDING during your big jump.
ALL MORE “sch” in “scheinen” in Bar 38
Bars 38-42 ALL Keep the pitch UP.

OTHER PLANS
We started at figure E.
WORDS -learn these at home, and just sing DA to get the rhythm first and don’t think too much about the rests.
Try to be very METRONOMIC and always be aiming for the next beat, keep moving forward. Its easy to just slip into REPETITION. Watch out for the FIRST beat of each bar and try to keep together.
Bar 78 From here ALTOS should NOT slow down.
Bar 105 Page 10 middle system , remember there is some silence
START Remove the repeat signs from BAR 1. The start is very BREATHY and bring out the CONSONANTS.

NON NOBIS
ALL Use the accents more and PING off them.
TENORS keep the A’s in pitch.
Bar 41 WE want a BIG MF sound.
Bar 57 Diminuendo and bring out the harmony.
Bar 85 etc Aim for a SPRINGY rhythm .

DANIEL
Beginning Don’t let it be JERKY, we want a SMOOTH start, Sing all the syllables in “A-that- a-He-brew Daniel”.
Bar 10 Quiet here.
Bar 14 BASSES BIG Sound here.
Bar 18-21 “Daniel” should be very PINGY
Bar 28 “Long” should be half as long.
Bar 34/35 BASSES something or other, can’t recall what exactly.

NEXT WEEK
Yes, Prepare for the PEACOCK, and learn the WORDS for Other Things

Choir Notes, 10/7/19

Choir Notes, 10th July 2019

1) Se see tuo corpo hoggi la stamps horrenda
- General advice: give the piece direction; think about phrasing; be graceful and imagine people dancing; the music colours the words so think about them together; don't be a robot
- Altos: beware of going flat in 3rds, e.g. bottom of page 2
- Tenors and Basses: be careful with tuning on page 2 (e.g. bar 28 of Tenors), especially of Gs - can stagger breaths amongst you to keep in tune
- Sopranos: practice entry at bar 21, A
- everyone to keep in tune (don't go flat), especially in bars 21-28
- everyone to think about how has the melody at the bottom of page 2 - who is important here; listen to the "al tormento ..." line in other parts
- remember that Che = Ke; Ce = Che; Ci = Chee (listen the recording that Nicola sent around)
- Sopranos: bar 32, don't over egg this, come off softly
- Sopranos: bar 46, don't go flat on the A
- Sopranos: bar 60, make E natural bright
- Sopranos and Basses: bar 61, fi.....yam (where fi is for quavers and yam on first note in bar 62) NB I don't have my music with me when I write this, so they could be semi quavers. Basically yam falls on new bar
- Sopranos: bar 64, don't go flat
- Basses: be careful with singing 'eh', don't close the voice
- Basses: bar 70, 'laugh' the melody

2) Other Plans
- practice clapping the rhythm - it is important to think about where the beat is, and count. Especially in rests. Think about breaking the bar down into beats and hearing them in your head as you sing
- Tenors: bar 6, coming in too late
- everyone to remember 2nd time bar in bar 44 - mark it in your music
- bar 20, don't rush, especially the Sopranos
- Basses: at E, be careful with the rhythm, clap to practice it
- everyone to remember the bar after G repeat
- everyone to practice this at home, need to get a good handle on the rhythms

3) Dream Angus
- Tenor and Basses, at the start, pay attention of the slurs with breathing
- bar 12, imagine there is a rest at the end of the bar in which you should breath
- bar 17, watch when to come off (crotchet off)

It's only 4 rehearsals until our St Giles rehearsal! MC will send an email about practices before the concerts and timings.
