Claire 2's notes, 21st January
1. Lulling
Basses: when you go down to the low B watch the pitching; we need to hear the 5th.
Tenors: I think you have an F# G# F# somewhere - again, watch pitching, don't drop.
Sops: good, apparently. Well done girlies.
Altos: 5ths should be open and resonant - listen to each other. We'll do the pronounciation later and eventually sing this off-by-heart.
STBs: keep sound down so that altos' melody can be heard.
All: Baju = bah-you. Keep 2nd syllable soft. Don't turn it into an 'or'.
2. Cloudburst
We began with an explanation of what is supposed to happen at Bar 32.
Here it is, I hope:
Everybody except the Sops sticks on the chord from Bar 31, humming. The hum is held through the fermata which will be very long as the speaker will be doing his bit at this point (Hay que dormir......con las manos).
Sops have a melody through this, each singing at random speed with staggered entrances. Sing very quietly and don't go too fast - you are singing about being sleepy! Keep it steady and without much rhythm.
Once speaker has finished ATBs on to their 'hay que dormir con los ojos abiertos' (Bar 32) - hold the 'o' of abiertos through the next spoken lines. Sops as before. Watch Ollie for 's' on end of 'abiertos' after this 2nd long fermata.
ATBs take breaths where necessary during both fermatas but /dim /before a breath and /cresc/ back in so it sounds smooth.
Second speaky bit John wait a bit longer before speaking. Sops /dim/ then J come in when you feel like it! Watch Ollie for quavers to give you tempo.
Both times Ollie will give us a 4/4 bar once the speaking bit is finished. Watch. It will be 1,2,3 hay que....
John is the Speaker. He must practise his accent - but then, only Anna-Lauren is excused from this:
- the 'd' of dormir is soft, more of a 'th/d'
- the 'b' in abiertos vibrates slightly b/v (bumbly!)
- 'r's are rolled
So sort of: eye keh th/dormirr con loss ochos ab/vierrtos, eye keh sonyarr con loss manoss
en voss alta, keh cantarr hasta keh el cantoh etchay
Sort of! And I presume a 't's are softish too?
Particulars:
Bar 16 - there will be a fermata on '-das'
Bar 28 make sure you sing out the 4th beat if you have it
Sop2 Alt2 Ten2 no 'la' ie 4th beat, sing la lluvia lluvia 28-29
Basses sing out on your low A
Bar 32 Watch, Ollie will be beating crotchets
Sops Bar 38 watch out for G#
Tenors Bar 35 get your E from the Sops' D
All: Bar 40-41 no break between 'que' and 'el canto' keep it going if it kills you or it won't make sense.
If you are looking over the next bit before next week, Sops watch out for page 13 where from having been on two lines you go back to being on one.
Altos page 12 you will be on third stave down not second.
Bog off
Twas good. Well remembered.
