Jenny's notes - 1st October
I didn't catch the notes at the end. I think there was something about a concert on Wednesday and we've to be at the National Library on George IV Bridge for 7pm.
No warm up but we sang a few pages of Bone - "Is that only quarter of it!" Exclaims Kay. " *^@!"
MO GHILLE
Get a copy of Ollie's version. Study it and sing it exactly how he's writ it. In spite of what everyone thinks Peter has told them, this is what we're singing so we're all doing the same thing! TEAR up your old pronounciation sheets.
[
Susan: If I tear up my old pronunciation sheet for Mo Ghille I am going to be in some difficulty as Ollie's version for the women has v3 and nowt else!! Well, the version I was given only had v3 - did I miss something?
Jenny: As you can see I've been a bit over enthusiastic about the tearing up of your copies! You'd better not tear anything up.
]
Remind yourselves of it. Play it through. IT'S NOT DIFFICULT.
WRITE on your copy. Your NEW copy:-
Women - V.1 + REFRAIN
Men - V.2 + REFRAIN
Women - V.3 (Now this is why we tear up old copies because V.3 is what USED to be V.4) + REFRAIN
Men - V.4 (what USED to be V.5 - get tearing!!)
refrain - TUTTI
MEN'S verse
It's TOOROCH wherever that comes in
and it's MUR rather than Moo or whatever other weird vowel you were doing
AIR U GEELYA
We are singing Verses 1, 3, and 5.
WOMEN start by singing the REFRAIN. Smooth P girls!
MEN while women are singing refrain LOOOK UP
EVERYONE LOOK UP after first refrain to get the SPEED for the FIRST VERSE. It will be faster and bouncier.
It's NAN YEELYAN not Geelyan. After an 'n' the 'g' becomes a 'y'. Think this only happens once in this piece.
ENNUNCIATE the word BEEOWN it means HILL. The word nam means the. Not ours to reason why the arranger put such an unimportant word on a daft beat..
FHIR A BHATA
SOPS only sing V.2 - I mean they sing the other verses as well, but V.2 is theirs, and theirs alone!
Remember to PAUSE in the LAST refrain.
Refrain AFTER V.2 is P
ENGAGE with the audience and pull out some energy (Ollie is sure we'll do this when we get an audience)
AULD LANG
S- yne NOT Z-yne (Mr Zingleton!)
Get a copy which is the same as everyone elses!
NO QUARTETS for this concert
Sing P for V. 3 & 4
DESCANT - V. 5 and last TWO refrains
NO SCOTTISH SNAP rhythm in verses!
Don't make the scottish snap too snappy. NOT d'duuur. TRY du-duuur
AE FOND SNOG
DON'T remember the dynamics. Just LOOK UP!!!
Well done
Aaaah people make sure it's blending and VERY legato
Sing to same phrasing as Helen
V.5 - After the break - Ae fond kiss (break) - do the next phrase in one breath and very legato so it emphasises the kiss being severed. It's called being dramatic.
CAULD BLAWS
Very good. Remember where you're P-ing. And Sopranos be forceful on the first time through F of last refrain.
NEXT rehearsal 22nd I'm doing warm up and Natalie's on notes. Thanks, Jenny
