Jenny's rehearsal notes, 22nd August

Let it be known Claire 1 was 'ere - dedication beyond the call of duty and marriage vows!!!

Well done, from Anne, for Sunday.

Anna-Lauren started with warm up. Trrrrrrills, Brrrrrrs, nya nya noises,..
TOP TIPS
1.- we're all too afraid of making noises beyond our register. Sometimes it's good to push the diaphragm to it's outer limits and try singing notes beyond your comfort zone confidently
2 - For quiet breathing make your tongue touch the bottom of your mouth and breathe. Claire 1 says J.Rutter says to do that with vowel sounds too.

Fhir a bhata
G given
PITCH - Could improve pitching by thinking of the interval and where you're going to, rather than where you've just been
Make sure you get pronounciation from Peter if you've not already done so
V1 and 3 descant is Anna-Lauren and Kay
V2 is soprano in unison on tune on their own
'S tric mi 'seall.... - 'S trich (bit like loch) and stick a K on the end - 'S trichk
chnoc a's air de... - ch (as in loch); a's (as in a soft vowelled u definitely not hard vowelled a)
'mair-each... - make sure the ch goes on the end, without gozzing on the audience
Dh'fheuch (am faic)... - like yuck with the k pronounced as in loch - yuch
tig thu'n nochd... - tig (cheek); thu (oo); 'n nochd (noch - like loch - and k at end) - cheekoonochk
doras... - soft vowel u NOT hard vowel a - door-us
eile... - Please don't sing ei-ler. *It's ei-le with no accent or stress.
The song is about looking for a boatman and the other boatmen saying she's stupid for giving her love to him (whether because it's a dangerous profession, because the others are jealous or because he's a bad lot is left for us to decide...)

Ae Fond Snog
F given
v. 1 might be solo. But if it's not, sing it like it is and support top notes
Listen hard to the open 5ths (1st three bars)
2 bar phrases for 1st verse
v.3 don't bother to break never met or never parted
v.4 weeeeel - not well; bring out words dearest, fairest, peace (break), enjoyment (break), love and leisure
THERE WILL BE AN S ON BENIGHT SO PUT ONE ON (Claire 1 is now a doctor so we're going with what she says)
there's a break between me and nae cheerful twinkle
Long phrase in V. 5. Keep the movement going. Breath so you don't break the movement.
People in the audience will know this so we can't be sloppy with it.

The Lamb
*p.4 Tenors and Sopranos are the same as are Basses and Altos (Anna-Lauren says it sounds like a traffic jam.) For a change don't listen to other people's notes but concentrate on where you are in relation to other people. Chris said something to do with mirrors and some bits in the music were reverse of what had just been sung or something. Maybe try holding it up to a mirror and see if it makes sense)
Watch the long phrasing and the rit.
There's a break after lamb in the last bar
Sopranos - watch the f natural p.4 third bar
... he is... - is in F major (if that helps anyone)
Don't plod. Think of words and phrase. Don't be scared of it or it'll sound awful.
Little - is the first word. Think about it before opening mouths.
Sing it tenderly.
Mark the rhythms on p.3 - especially come off on made at the same time

River Dance
F given (?)
Be aware of chord changes and placing the chords
Hang on to your note (there's thieves about!)
Change key decisively (but when it says to, not when you feel like it!!)

Irish Blessing
B Flat given
ALTER YOUR COPIES SO IT SAYS B FLAT GIVEN
Place the first note in your head before singing it.

Magnum
*From p.8
Watch Ollie, especially at the bottom of p.8 onto p.9.
It's Ollie's prerogative to slow down or speed up so watch out he is bound to be mischievous to keep us on our toes.

Gaelic Set
See Peter for pronounciations
ACK'M
Each song moves straight on to the next with no break, no starting notes for individual songs given
'sown'n eelya - bars 9 and 10 for 1st time in all three verses is sopranos only
Watch rhythms. Some are dotty quaver, semi-quaver and some are semi-quaver, dotty quaver
Chuala - only the SOPRANOS sing mia

THANKYOU to Anne for taking the rehearsal, got a lot done.

For Whithorn WE NEED TO BE THERE AT 2.30pm. The concert's at 7.30. And it's a good 3 hour drive.
On Wednesday Natalie is doing notes and er ... would anyone like to do warm up?
Ollie crossed himself out, he's doing next week ... Thanks, Jenny
